JoAnn Burchfiel has been a student of Calligraphy and Photography for sixteen years. The integration of her Photography and Calligraphy is natural she says; calligraphy and photography are not as different as they may seem. "Fundamentally, I enjoy the study of form, be they letters and/or images. Then I look at the placement of these forms."

As a photographer, JoAnn's specializes in nature and macro photography, and enjoys using a variety of presentation techniques such as the Polaroid Image Transfers exhibited on this site. She has traveled extensively photographing the pockets of wilderness surrounding her Northern California home, and has photographed as well in Alaska, the Pacific Northwest, the Grand Canyon and British Columbia. Her photography has been published in travel brochures and she won an award from the Sierra Club in photography in 1995.

JoAnn has vast experience as a calligrapher. She has studied under the well known calligraphers Thomas Ingmire, Ward Dunham and Georgianna Greenwood. For nearly a decade she has been a council member for the Friends of Calligraphy and the vice president of the organization for two years. JoAnn has taught uncial, foundational and italic calligraphy for over six years to groups and as private lessons.
